Halifax PeakBlend
Halifax PeakBlend
Halifax PeakBlend is a cool-season cover crop mixture combining annual ryegrass, winter peas, and Taproot Radish — a grass, legume, and broadleaf combination that excels across most cover crop objectives. The one exception is lasting residue, though if winter peas successfully overwinter, both the ryegrass and peas will flourish through spring until termination, providing strong extended coverage.
Annual ryegrass delivers excellent soil structure, erosion protection, and spring biomass. Winter peas contribute rapid nitrogen fixation and high-quality biomass, while Taproot Radish breaks up compaction, scavenges nutrients, and improves water infiltration. Together they create a high-performing three-way mix suited for a wide range of fields and rotations.
Whether winter peas successfully overwinter depends largely on fall seeding timing and growth stage going into winter. Plants should reach 6–8 inches before a hard freeze to reduce the risk of heaving — too little growth increases vulnerability, while too much can cause winterkill as well. Snow cover and companion crops in the mix both aid in the overwintering process.
Inter-seeding is not recommended for this blend.
